I was very saddened to learn of Gary's passing. He had an infectious smile and was always willing to help anyone in need. He helped me immensely in the sergeant's promotional process, something I could never repay him for and will never forget. I would not be where I am today without the generosity of people like Gary. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. God bless you all.

It was fun having Gary as my coach. He was by far the best coach I've ever had. I wish he was still alive but life is sometimes unfair. -Josh Walker (part of Gary's soccer family)

Dearest Cooley Family,
I can't begin to express the heaviness that I feel in my heart for the loss that you are experiencing...Gary was such a joy and blessing to all who knew him. He was an amazing father to his children and I know that they will miss him so much. His children are blessed to have had the example of such a great man in their lives. I can't imagine saying goodbye to a son, or even a brother...especially one as sweet as Gary. He was precious and he will be missed dearly. The only hope that we can hold on to during pain and loss, is to know that we have a promise to be together again. I pray that God gives you peace and comforts you from now, until you meet again. Our love and prayers go out to you all.

Our hearts break for a man we were only blessed to know for the last 3 years. Gary came into our life through Jana and we are all richer for it. A smile and whit that could light up a room...many memories, many laughs and now many tears. God be with each of you as you walk this tough road. Courtney, Hannah and Caden your father loved you beyond words. Jana and Riley what a light you were in his life, he was so happy he found you. Hold your faith close and your memories closer. Gary was such a warm and friendly person. We always felt blessed to have his support here at the downtown probation/parole office, and not just professionally. Gary had a great gift at blending personal and professional and he was so much fun to chat with as well as work with. I believe I speak for everyone in our office when I say I will miss him very much.

Words cannot express the emptiness we felt when learning of your loss. As his school principal, Gary was a "special" person with whom I shared a lot of time when he needed someone to listen. Gary leaves a host of relatives and friends to share his "graduation" into Glory. I am so glad that I knew him and that he knew Jesus Christ. God Bless

As I write these words, I remember the years of friendship we shared. Growing up with family holidays and birthdays. I think back to the beautiful home that Uncle Dusty and Aunt Terry had downtown with the dobermans and then flash forward a few years to one of the first holidays in the "pink house". I was sure that if I had to eat one more "creative turkey or ham dish" I was going to be ruined for life and have to become a vegetarian! Do you all recall the "indecent" with Gary and me in Northtown.. I do not recall all the details but our "KCPD Police Family" trumped theirs!
I am beyond heart-broken about the loss of my long time friend. I am very proud to be associated with the man, father, and Police Officer that encapsulate Gary. My deepest heartfelt condolences to his entire family and the KCPD Police Department, for everyone has suffered a great loss. I regret that due to my current military obligations that I can not be there in person to say "see you on the other side" to Gary and to wrap my arms around Aunt Terry and the rest of the family. Please remember that I love you all very much and you will remain in my heart forever!
